Over the last months we have seen an encouraging increase in apprenticeship and traineeship uptake as part of our state's economic recovery from 2020's disruptions.
All new training contracts for apprenticeships and traineeships must meet the legislative requirements before we can register them. This is to make sure all parties are positioned to meet their obligations so that Victorian apprentices and trainees get the skills and knowledge they need to complete their apprenticeship or traineeship.
As an employer, you have a number of obligations to your apprentice or trainee. You need to:
- make sure they receive the appropriate training and are enrolled with a registered training organisation or a TAFE
- allow them to have time off to attend off-the-job training, as agreed with your registered training organisation
- provide them with appropriate facilities and equipment, and
- make sure they are supervised by someone who is appropriately qualified and experienced .
To make sure both employers and apprentices/trainees are getting the most out of the training contract, authorised officers from the Victorian Apprenticeship Field Services (VAFS) may contact you to make sure obligations are being met. They will be able to support you with information should you need to get things back on track.
VAFS also contacts apprentices and trainees to make sure they have what they need to complete their apprenticeships and traineeships.
