On 28 November 2018, the Commonwealth Government announced that they will conduct an independent review of the vocational educational and training (VET) sector.
The Commonwealth Government has indicated that the VET Review will focus on ensuring students are getting the right skill sets they need to succeed in a changing labour market. It will consider skills shortages in VET related occupations; the impacts of new technologies on the VET sector; and flexibility of qualification structures to support industries seeking skilled workers.
Steven Joyce, the former New Zealand Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, and Minister for Finance, will lead the review.
The review will seek information from any interested parties through a public submissions process, open from mid-December 2018 to 25 January 2019.
The final report will be delivered to the Government in March 2019.
